This was my original vision for the game- being able to race against other cyclists online, anywhere in the world! I decided to go the single player against AI for several reasons:
- Cyclists are of all different skill levels and finding others that match your riding skill could be a challenge for a wide group of potential players.
- Multiplayer is a big challenge to implement and particularly support- it requires servers to manage the games and handle all of the scenarios of latency on one user’s connection. These servers involve a monthly cost to maintain and this scales with the size of the userbase. I honestly don’t know what to expect from this game- will it be just a few sales or potentially hundreds or thousands of sales? If it’s just a few sales, the potential pay off would not be commensurate with my effort level and costs.
So I decided to release a single player version first and gauge the response from customers and potential customers. If there is lots of interest in the game, I will definitely consider adding multiplayer support. And this will determine how much additional I’d need to charge to cover the ongoing server costs involved as well. Yes, you read that right- multiplayer will have to involve some kind of additional cost, should it be developed. Hopefully enough of you feel it’s worth paying for this potentially awesome experience!
